Over two months after the multi-crore Citibank scam was unearthed, the bank has terminated the services of seven employees of its Gurgaon branch. On Tuesday, a Citi spokesperson said, “Following disciplinary procedures, the services of a few employees of our Gurgaon branch have been terminated.” He did not divulge the names of the employees.
The employees whose services have been terminated are branch manager, Amit Zalpuri, investment counsellor, Nitin Chawla, and Puri’s wife, Nidhi Uppal, Amit, Sharan Narang, Vineet Chhabra and Parikshit. All of them were earlier suspended by the bank.
Bank sources maintained that services of ‘some’ employees were terminated for their act of negligence and they have not been implicated in the fraud case. They argued that had they been involved in the fraud, they would have been caught by the local police, which are investigating the case.
Police sources said from the very first day they have been suspecting that Puri alone could not have engineered and run the scam for so long. They had been maintaining that Puri’s seniors could also have been in the know of his activities and could have been a party to the crime.
Earlier, the role of two suspended employees of Gurgaon branch - Chawla and Zalpuri - had come under the scanner. Investigators said they have found proof of continuous flow of cash from Puri’s accounts to the accounts of these two officials. They were also interrogated by the investigators.
The cops had found that transactions totalling about `18 lakh were made to the account of Amit Jalpuri, who was working as a branch manager. Similarly, ` 13 lakh was transferred to Nitin Chawla’s account, who was an investment officer at this branch.
