DIMAPUR: Family Planning Association of India, Nagaland branch organized a medical health camp on April 7 at Longwa, popularly known as international boundary village between India and Burma (Myanmar).
The FPA team traveled 966kms to and fro to observe the occasion of ‘World Health Day’ 2011 at Longwa.
Most border villages of Nagaland still remain in need of medical care and facilities particularly maternal and child care, basic immunizations and health check-ups for pregnant woman still remains a far cry, observed the FPA.
With cleanliness and hygiene as a matter of serious concern, the FPA believed things would transform only through the school and Church besides proper sensitization of the elders and stakeholders which has vital influence and respect.
The FPA team distributed used clothes collected from well wishers and philanthropic people in addition to medical health camp where a total of 88 people both young and old received medical attention and medicines for their ailments.
According to Dr. Dietho Koza, the good thing about the villagers was the absence of life style diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure which is very common today.
Dr. Dietho Koza however observed that worm infestation amongst all ages was high with protein energy malnutrition, respiratory tract infections as other areas of concern.
The understanding of family planning and contraception seems to be non-existent with many households counting more than 6 to 7 members or more, stated FPA.
The FPA team conducted a rural mobile health mela at Totok village the next evening where hundreds of people attended the program.
The highlights of the awareness program included quiz competition, singing, and film show directed at HIV awareness and family planning, maternal and child health care.
