IAY scheme: Rs.1004 cr earmarked for NE

Union ministry of rural development has earmarked an outlay of Rs. 1004 crore for the North Eastern states under the Indira Awas Yojana (IAY) programme for the year 2011-12, an official statement said today. A minimum of 60 per cent of the funds under the scheme are earmarked for assistance to SC/ST families living below the poverty line, 3 per cent for disabled living below the poverty line (BPL) in rural areas, the statement said. The aim of the IAY is to provide assistance for construction of dwelling units and up gradation of existing Kutcha houses for SC/ST and non SC/ST rural families living below the poverty line. “15 per cent of the IAY funds are also earmarked for BPL minorities. 5 per cent of the total allocated funds under IAY are kept apart to meet the exigencies arising out of natural calamities and other emergent situations like riot, arson, fire, circumstances,” read the statement.
