Samsung has announced that it will launch Galaxy S II, the company’s much-awaited flagship Android phone in India in May. While the company refused to specify the exact date of the launch, sources said that the phone is likely to be available towards the end of May with a price of around `35,000.
The new phone will succeed Galaxy S, which was launched in India last year and helped Samsung take a lead role in Android smartphone category. According to Samsung India, Galaxy S II will be powered by a 1.2Ghz processor. Galaxy S II sports a 2.27-Inch Super AMOLED+ screen and runs on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) customized with Samsung’s Touchwiz 4 user interface. Galaxy S II will have an 8 megapixel camera and 1Gb RAM.
Though it will take a while before Galaxy S II comes to market, Samsung allowed media to have a brief hands-on experience with the device on Wednesday. The new phone is taller by around three inches as compared to Galaxy S but its weight has come down by three grams. Galaxy S II feels very light, especially considering its size. The body is made up of plastic. The device does not feel as sturdy as those from HTC or LG, it is compact and built well.
Samsung also announced its plan to introduce next version of Galaxy Tab in India by June. Initially, the Tab will come in two sizes — 10.1 inches and 8.9 inches — with plans to introduce a 7-inch version later. Powered by dual-core processors and running Android Honeycomb, the Tabs have been positioned as competitor to iPad 2. The new Tab is just 8.6mm thick, making it sleeker than iPad2.
