Minister for urban development and higher and technical education, Dr. Shürhozelie on April 11, held a consultative meeting at the conference hall of Mokokchung Municipal Council with representatives from Ao Senden (Hoho), Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC), Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce & Industries (MCCI), Village Council of Ungma, Chuchuyimpang, Mokokchung, Khensa villages and District Administration of Mokokchung.
The meeting was held with regard to municipal and town council election and 33% women’s reservation, on which the minister was of the view that that since there was a constitutional provision regarding the issue, it was important to consult people before taking any steps. Shürhozelie said the purpose of the meeting was to listen and take note of the views expressed by leaders of different agencies and the people so that an amicable settlement could be achieved through the people’s mandate.
President Ao Senden, Lendinokdang while expressing gratitude to the minister for his concern towards the Ao community also mentioned about the decision made by representative from all Ao villages at a meeting on November 2, 2010, where it resolved that the policy of 33% women’s reservation will not be accepted within the boundary of the Aos. He said the Aos since time immemorial have never discriminated the womenfolk and the resolution adopted in the meeting is not against women but against the reservation policy. President Ao Senden further stated that, people may think that the decision of the Ao Senden was irrational but clarified that it was doing so to maintain the age old culture, believing the 33% women’s reservation would surely distort the fabric of Ao culture.
With regard to municipal and town council election, on behalf of the land owners (Chuchuyimpang, Ungma, Khensa and Mokokchung Village Councils), Puryapang Lkr, Tatar of Mokokchung village said the land owners would agree and support the municipal and town council election once an amendment considering the exemption of Tax on land and building was made. The minister was accompanied by joint director, urban local body, Kohima, Toshimanen, additional deputy commissioner and administrator MMC R. Asenla Keitzar and other officials.
