Trying to come clean after attacks from political parties, Anna Hazare and his supporters declared their assets on Friday amidst allegations of corruption from senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh.
Arvind Kejriwal, member of Jan Lokpal Bill drafting committee and a close associate of Hazare, declared that the movement has a total of Rs 82 lakhs in its kitty, all coming through donations from the general public.
Kejriwal further added, “Videography of the panel’s meetings should be done.”
Refuting Digvijay’s charge that he was a ‘chela’ of Aruna Roy, Kejriwal hit back saying, “I respect Aruna Ji. I respect Anna Ji. But it is wrong to say that I am a ‘chela’. I have a mind of my own”.
He further justified his inclusion in the drafting committee by clarifying that he was a part of the original team that wrote the first draft of the Jan Lokpal Bill and is aware of the nuances and intricacies.
Also present at the meeting was activist Prashant Bhushan, who along with his father Shanti Bhushan, is also a part of the drafting committee, reported ZeeNews.
Answering questions of the media persons, Prashant slammed Digvijay for making false statements and said, “There is an organised campaign against me and my father.”
Bhushan added, “I have filed an FIR in connection with the false reports against my father.”
It should be noted that there are five members of the civil society in the Lokpal Bill panel, namely Anna Hazare, Shanti Bhushan, Santosh Hegde, Prashant Bhushan and Arvind Kejriwal.
Yesterday, a spokesperson for the civil society had claimed that social activist Mallika Sarabhai had reaffirmed her faith in the campaign. In a letter to Hazare, the group quoted her as saying, “I am totally with Anna Hazare in his commitment to weed out corruption. Anna told me that his understanding about development in Gujarat comes mainly from press reports, which I feel are not entirely accurate.
“However I must add that I would be ecstatic if every village in Gujarat could transform into a Ralegan Sidhi. I admire Anna’s dedicated crusade over the last three decades and I stand by him completely,” Sarabhai was quoted as saying.
Sarabhai had earlier expressed reservation at Hazare’s praise for Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi and said she would dissociate with the campaign if he did not clarify his stand on the BJP leader.
