Prohibition Act must be amended: NMA

Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA) president Abei-ü Meru on Saturday stressed the need for the state government to amend the prevailing Total Prohibition Act if prohibition was to continue adding, “it’s a shame to talk of prohibition when alcohol is flowing like water.” She said if prohibition was to continue, the Act has to be amended so that the concerned department could take stringent action to enforce the act in the state. We have seen so many alcoholic husbands and alcoholism is increasing among women as well, the NMA president said during the destruction of seized IMFL and contraband ganja at the new KMC dumping site Saturday. She, therefore, said that the people cannot just keep depending on the state government but that everyone has to act. She appealed everyone to work hand in hand. The destruction was carried out through the order of the District & Session Judge Kohima and altogether 621 cases of Beer, 942 cases of Rum, 20 cases of Whisky and 2860 Kgs of contraband ganja were destroyed. The destructed items were estimated to be worth over Rs. 50 lakh in the open market. The destroyed IMFL were those consignments seized in five different cases registered this year and the contraband Ganja were those seized in 11 different cases registered in different police stations this year. The destruction was carried out in the presence of M. T. Therieh, Judicial Magistrate First Class, Vikyato APP, Medothi Chakhesang PASI, Police Court personnel, NMA and media persons.
