1 die in accidental firing in Mokokchung

One person from Ungma village succumbed to injury Monday after being accidentally shot by his own pistol. The deceased was identified as one Lanusowa. The incident happened Sunday midnight while Lanusowa unsuccessfully attempted to remove a bullet from the pistol chamber. Thereafter, another person, reportedly the bodyguard of Toshipokba NPF candidate for 26 Aoenglenden A/C by-poll was called to help remove the bullet. However, the bullet accidentally went off and hit Lanusowa on one side of the eye and exited through the ear. The victim was immediately rushed to Jorhat, Assam and on reaching Jorhat at around 2:00 a.m. in the morning, the doctors advised he be taken to Guwahati. Subsequently Lanusowa was airlifted to Guwahati but died moments after the chopper took off. The body was brought back to Ungma village Monday afternoon and the funeral service is scheduled to take place on Tuesday. When OC Police Station II Mokokchung S. Longkok Jamir was contacted over phone, he disclosed that the incident was a case of accidental firing. He also admitted that the caliber of the pistol was yet to be ascertained. The OC said the Ungma Village Council was entrusted to hand over the weapon to the police station by April 19. The OC also revealed that further investigation into the incident was underway.

Meanwhile, in the run-up for the 26 Aonglenden A/C by-poll schedule on May 7, deputy commissioner and district election officer Mokokchung, Lithrongla G. Chishi issued an order banning carrying of arms within Mokokchung district with immediate effect till completion of election process on May 15. The order cited the Arms Act 1959 where anyone found in possession of arms shall be liable to confiscation and the license granted to such Arms shall be deemed to have been revoked.
