Even as the election campaign picks up in this Congress subjugated district, the ruling party has hardly been able to assert its initial predominance in the area, with little encouraging reports coming in for the party, from few of the four Legislative Assembly Constituencies. On the other hand the PAPA (Peoples’ Alliance for Peace Agreement) backed candidates are leading in the western part of Karbi Anglong district. Baithalangso’s electorate voted Dr. Mansing Rongpi in the last Assam Legislative Assembly Poll, but this time his position seems to be vulnerable. Here, the apparent reason is not only the combined vote of CPI(ML) and ASDC going in favor of PAPA but discontentment within a section of party workers bickering for ticket has thrown Dr. Rongpi in the reverse gear at the moment.
Jotson Bey ex-CEM of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) is now enjoying the support of both CPI (ML) and ASDC along with other organizations who have joined PAPA to oust Congress. The Congress strong hold Howraghat LA seat is largely dependent on the votes of Nomati, Korkanti, Phuloni locality, so long, for last constitutive terms Congress strong man and sitting Hills Area Development Minister-Kohrsing Engti dominated this constituency. And till now he is the best contender, but unexpected rise of PAPA and friction within the party has dampened the Congress spirit in that area. Chomang Kro also Ex-CEM of KAAC and undisputed leader of un divided ASDC and CPI(ML) is rapidly penetrating in the Congress bastion. The other cause of concern for Khorsing Engti is the BJP contender Tapan Teron who is sure to cut a good figure slightly at the cost Congress. Mongol Sing Engti one of the senior leader of Congress and present Chairman of KAAC, who applied for Congress ticket for Howraghat constituency and was denied by the party is not expected to work whole heartedly for Khorsing Engti. As of now, if Congress is suffering from uncertainty, PAPA backed candidate is busy in synchronizing dynamics, like complete backing of CPI (ML) and support of disgruntle Congress faction.
Bokajan LA seat has remained a distant dream for Congress since last consecutive elections ASDC’s young leader Jogotsing Engti has emerged victories defeating Congress with marginal difference each time, and in this occasion also the same Jogotsing Engti is contesting but with a new boost. He is the PAPA nominee and has the backing of CPI(ML) in addition to his own party ASDC. PAPA also have 64 other organizations within its fold, this has made the Congress task more strife. On the other had Klendung Engti son of sitting Member of Parliament of Hills area, Biren Sing Engti is the congress candidate from Bokajan, and winning of this seat has become a question of prestige for the Karbi Anglong District Congress.
The battle royal will be fought for the Diphu seat, a cosmopolitan belt of the district. Here Bidyasing Engleng of Congress would have a comfortable win, have not the unexpected rise of PAPA taken place. Former chairman of KAAC and once Congress’s firebrand leader George Millick is contesting as PAPA’s nominee for this seat, this has ensured the backing of the combined force of ASDC and CPI(ML) for him. The number of vote this two party command can upset any political equation of this district, if cast honestly. If all goes well for PAPA Congress may have to face serious trouble for Diphu seat also. The other reason for Congress bother is the meteoric rise of the independent John Engti Kathar, a freshly retired IAS officer, who has joined the fry with a missionary ambition. This person is getting immense support from high class Karbi society and presently making in-road in the traditional vote banks of Congress mainly.
The dark horse of Diphu constituency who can win the race unpredictably is the BJP aspirant Padma Maibongsa. In the last LA election he received around 25000 vote as an independent candidate, and the official contender of BJP received around 15000 thousands of vote, this time contesting from BJP banner he will surely be gaining the traditional votes of BJP in addition to his own support, which may surpass the magic number of votes necessary to win this closely contested seat.
Till now, large rally or canvassing in convoy has, visibly been avoided by candidates, meetings in remote and rural areas are of course taking place, no star campaigner have reached this district so far, due to the sternness of the election commission, campaign have been restricted within small meetings and door to door approach.
