As millions across the globe plunged into darkness on Saturday night in a pro-environment initiative to observe Earth Hour, Nagaland also joined in the bit for an hour from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm. However response from the state was rather apathetic and involuntary as power department had to shut down power in the entire state to observe Earth Hour.
Despite several public advertisements, only a few households complied with the appeal to turning off non-essential lights and electrical appliances. However, some observers maintained that very little awareness was created on Earth Hour in the current year.
Meanwhile, Earth Hour was observed in many major cities across the globe. Rashtrapati Bhavan led the nation in observing “Earth Hour’’ which had “Go beyond the hour” as the theme by switching off all the lights in the building’s exterior. All non-essential lights in the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President’s Estate and also the family wing of President Pratibha Patil were switched off during the one hour period.
“Throughout the last year, efforts have been made under the Roshini Programme to reduce consumption of electricity in the main building of Rashtrapati Bhavan as well in the President’s Estate. There was a reduction of 22.3 per cent in electricity consumption and reduction of 16.8 per cent in the total number of units consumed, as compared to calendar year 2009. As a result, savings on electricity consumption were approximately Rs 1.64 crore and about 26 lakh units were saved,” a PTI report stated.
Popular landmarks like the India Gate, the Qutub Minar and the Red Fort in Delhi, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and the Gateway of India in Mumbai, national defence establishments, universities, hotels, cinema complexes and shopping malls across the nation participated in the event.
Earth hour is an initiation of World Wide Fund for Nature observed on the last Saturday of March annually for creating awareness on global warming and climate change.
