India promises $1 million for Myanmar quake relief

India will provide assistance of $1 million to Myanmar for relief and rehabilitation in the areas affected by last week’s earthquake.
Last week, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, in a message to Senior General Than Shwe, chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of Myanmar, mourned the loss of lives.
The prime minister offered help in the rescue and relief efforts for the earthquake which hit the country March 24.
Following up on this assurance, government has announced an assistance of $1 million for relief and rehabilitation in the affected areas, external affairs ministry spokesperson Vishnu Prakash said. Myanmar was hit by a 6.8 magnitude earthquake in which at least 74 people were reported killed and over 100 others injured. India enjoys strong bilateral ties with the military-junta ruled Myanmar.
