Manipur celebrates New Year

IMPHAL, APR 4 : Manipur on Monday celebrated ‘Cheiraoba’, the New Year of Meitei (Manipuri) lunar calendar with people offering prayers and organising special feasts. Prayers for peace and protection were offered in the violent riddled state of Manipur during the festival.
“I prayed to the gods to take away all the bad things bring good things with the coming of the New Year,” said Memcha Devi, a housewife adorned with traditional attire, who performed a ritual on the occasion at her house.
Apart from President of India, Manipur Governor Gurbachan Jagat, chief minister O Ibobi Singh and many others greeted the people of the state on the occasion.
In his message, Gurbachan Jagat expressed hope that the New Year would usher in an era of peace, prosperity and progress in the state and peaceful co-existence amongst all sections of people.
CM, O Ibobi Singh, in said ‘’Let us resolve to set new goals and strive for individual as well as collective wellbeing,’’. He also appealed to people to work for unity and dedicate themselves to make Manipur a peaceful and prosperous state.
GOC, 57 Mountain Division, Major General DS Hooda and all ranks of the division also greeted the people.
Cheiraoba is the New Year festival of Manipur celebrated on the first day of the month Sajibu on April where Sanamahi, the domestic deity of Manipur people is worshipped.
