Govt to probe death of woman allegedly by AR

After the Assam Rifles authorities agreed for conduct of an enquiry into the facts and circumstances leading to the death of a 68-year old woman allegedly by a stray bullet fired by troops of the 15 Assam Rifles, the dead body has claimed by the family on Monday.
A bullet reportedly fired by troops of 15 AR posted at Thoubal near Chaoyaima Higher Seconday School killed the 68-year old Waikhom Mani Devi, on the Saturday night at 12.10 am. It was reported that the 15 AR troops had fired the guns while celebrating India’s victory in the cricket World Cup.
Members of the JAC formed in connection with the killing held a meeting today with the chief minister and authorities of the Assam Rifles at the bungalow of the chief minister. The meeting ended with an agreement to conduct an inquiry into the incident, a member of the JAC said.
He said that AR authority also agreed to take action against the erring personnel as per the finding of the inquiry.
Government, in the meantime agreed to compensate the family and also provide government job to a member of the family, the JAC member said.
Meanwhile, a highly reliable source said that the postmortem report confirmed that the bullet that hit the Waikhom was from 7.62 mm LMG. AR authority said that investigation into the possibility of an accidental discharge of weapons is being initiated.
They also assured full cooperation and assistance to the family of the deceased, the police and the local people to investigate into the matter.
