Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) Monday finalized the candidature of former governor of Maharastra and former Nagaland chief minister Dr. S.C. Jamir for the bye-election to the 26 Aonglenden Assembly Constituency scheduled to be held on May 8 next.
The decision to this effect was reportedly taken in a meeting of the NPCC Election Committee which was held at the Congress Bhavan here Monday. The party’s recommendation is being sent for final approval by the party high command. However, sources said Dr Jamir’s candidature was a foregone conclusion as he had already held a preliminary consultation in New Delhi recently.
Considerable speculations were doing the rounds over Jamir’s reentry into state politics after completing his gubernatorial assignments in Goa then Maharashtra
Following the demise of then sitting MLA of 26 Aonglenden AC, Nungshizenba, the name of Dr. S.C. Jamir , former chief minister of the state spanning over two decades was doing the rounds. Dr Jamir has been elected from the constituency since 1974 and after vacating the seat late Nungshizenba had been representing the constituency
Meanwhile, the ruling NPF and the NCP are also said to be in the process of finalizing their respective candidates. NPF president Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu when contacted disclosed that the party had not taken the decision on its candidate.
NPF party sources attributed the delay on divisions regarding four ticket aspirants including the widow of late Nungshizenba among the party workers and the legislators. However, the issue is expected to be settled soon, they said.
Speaking to Nagaland Post, NCP president Neiba Ndang said the party was also likely to set up a candidate. The decision was taken following the visit of the NPC in-charge North East PA Sangma to Dimapur recently. In this regard, the party had done some survey already but was yet to finalize the candidate.
