DIMAPUR: Parliamentary secretary for economics and statistics R .Tohanba visited the directorate of economics and statistics and interacted with officials of the department.
Joint director HoD, Sacheo Ovung apprised Tohanba of the department’s programmes for the current financial year.
Interacting with the officials, the parliamentary secretary highlighted on the need for conducting induction training, in-service training, district level training and training for personnel attached to line departments.
He urged the department to conduct the training phase-wise, starting with officers in the directorate, followed by the districts.
Stressing on importance of official statistics in planning, he appealed the department to improve data collection and ensure timely publication of the reports.
He also mentioned that registration of births and deaths was one of the core activities of the department and hence stated that accurate data should be maintained.
Various officers presented their achievements and activities.
Officer in-charge of price section apprised the parliamentary secretary on collection of price data for compilation of consumer price index, besides collection of retail prices from eight districts, and wholesale prices from Dimapur district.
In 2010, retail prices of 380 items were collected by conducting extensive survey in Kohima district.
These 380 items would be subject to screening and selection would be made on the basis of need.
For national sample survey (NSS), tabulation and generation of tables and report on the basis of 65 rounds, survey especially on domestic tourism and housing condition is in the final stages of completion.
