SHILLONG, APR 6 (NPN): A local court in Meghalaya Wednesday remanded two- day police custody against a top government official, who has been arrested here on charges of accepting bribe, an official said.
A special cell of the Meghalaya Police Tuesday arrested Langstar Kharkongor, the state’s Block Development Officer for demanding and accepting a bribe of `50,000 in lieu of a payment of rupees five lakh from Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act.
“We had got a complaint against the official from the Chairman of a Village Employment Council Chandra Lyngdoh Nongbri, accusing the block official of demanding `50,000 for releasing a payment of rupees five lakh,” M Kharkrang , the Superintendent of Police (Shillong), said.
Following the compliant, he said the special police cell laid a trap and arrested the officer red-handed while he was accepting `45,000.
Kharkrang said the VEC chairman had earlier paid an amount of `5000 on March 31 to Kharkongor after he had promised to pay the amount.
“We have registered a case against the officer under the Prevention of Corruption Act,” the police official said.
