By-election to 26 Aonglenden Assembly Constituency has been refixed by a day to May 7 following a request from the state government, the Election Commission said on Wednesday. The by-poll for this constituency was earlier scheduled for May 8.
A request had been received from the state government either to advance or postpone the date of poll owing to certain administrative and other grounds, the Election Commission said in statement.
The state government had requested the Election Commission to change the polling date since Sunday would be inconvenient as voters, majority of them Christians in the constituency, would attend service in churches.
After reviewing the matter, “The Commission has decided that the poll in the constituency shall take place on May 7 (Saturday) in place of May 8 (Sunday). The remaining schedule and dates will remain unchanged,” it said.
By-election to 26 Aonglenden Assembly Constituency was necessitated following the demise of Congress MLA Nungshijungba Longkumer last year.
Meanwhile, the state election department has issued a schedule for by-election to 26 Aonglenden A/C.
Issue of notification – April 11, last date of making nominations – April 18, scrutiny of nominations – April 19, last date for withdrawal of candidature – April 21, date of poll – Mat 7 (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.), counting of votes – May 13 (to start at 8 a.m.), date before which election shall be completed – May 15.
