The West Bengal government is preparing two bullet proof cars for the new chief minister Mamata Banerjee. State transport secretary Rajpal Singh Kahlon and city police commissioner RK Pachnanda had several rounds of meetings recently to decide on the bullet proof cars.
Mamata has been allotted a Z plus category security, but the “people’s leader” never bothered to take the security arrangements that were prepared and given to her. For a long time now, Banerjee’s indifference to taking such elaborate security arrangements have been a cause of worry for the state and central governments. In the Maoist belt of Lalgarh, en route to the Kolkata airport and on several occasions, she hasn’t bothered to take the precautions arranged for her, leading to series of meetings between state and central government top brass. But government officers failed to convince her that these security arrangements were essential in view of the threat perception.
It is not known whether after being sworn in as the new Bengal chief minister, Mamata will take any of the new arrangements that are part of the protocol of security. However, they are still keeping everything in place. “We don’t want to take chances. After all, there are specifications of security for the WB chief minister, and there is scope of discussing this with her only later.
But we don’t want to keep that for later and would like to take the measures well ahead so that it may be ready right from the time she is sworn in on Friday,” a senior state government officer said.
Banerjee’s home at Harish Chatterjee Street in Kalight is right now flooded with people from all walks of life. From monks to farmers, from intellectuals to businessmen, they are all there to wish her on her brilliant success. That too has been cause of worry for the police because it is impossible to provide the house with elaborate security cover.
Moreover, Banerjee can hardly be persuaded to stop meeting people the way she does without caring about security concerns. Under the circumstances, the state government officers are hoping and keeping their fingers crossed that once she takes over as the new CM on Friday, she will take the bullet proof vehicles that have been specially made for the purpose.
