The Mayangnokcha Award Trust under the “Year of Capacity Building” of the State Government first initiated the School Assessment program during 2008-09. This is a voluntary program, in the sense that only those schools who wishes to be assessed, and submits the requisite information leading to the final Self Evaluative Report, are assessed. However, at this stage, due to resource constraints, the program is limited to schools within Dimapur, Kohima and Mokokchung only. On June 29, 2010 the results of 14 graded schools were released at Hotel Japfü, Kohima, by the minister education. The government of Nagaland, under the CM’s Corpus Fund coordinated by the Planning & Coordination Department, has continued to support the program, and has made it possible to complete the assessment of two more schools in Dimapur, namely, Govt. Higher Secondary School, Chumukedima and St. Mary Montessori & High Schoool, Dimapur.
Name of School Overall Score % Grade Date of Grade awarded
St. Mary Montessori & High School, Latika Complex, Dimapur 62.60% ?? May 2, 2011
Govt. Higher Secondary School, Chumukedima 55.70% ? May 3, 2011
With the national policy of Right to Education (RTE), new pedagogy and no detention being implemented, the emphasis is now getting shifted from an exam centric approach to education, to a more comprehensive and holistic development of a child.
Continuous assessment of schools and the various parameters of teaching environment and learning shall therefore become more and more critical. Assessment and Accreditation of schools therefore needs to invariably become integral components of a healthy educational system. Such Assessment and Accreditation by an independent and creditable third party is being encouraged by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) towards ensuring quality education.
