Troops of 5 Assam Rifles were prevented from taking away some NSCN (I-M) cadres apprehended from Senapati district headquarters, a report received here said Friday.
The report said the troops had apprehended five cadres of the NSCN (I-M) from Senapati district headquarters Friday around 2 p.m. but their identities could not be ascertained. However, sources claimed that most were important functionaries of the outfit.
Womenfolk in large numbers prevented the AR from proceeding to Imphal to hand over the arrested cadres to police by blocking the NH 29 along Ningthoupham village.
Negotiation between the agitating womenfolk and AR troops was reportedly going on at the time of filing this report.
It may be recalled that womenfolk of Tamenglong had also protested when 11 Assam Rifles in Tamenglong district headquarters arrested a leader of NSCN (I-M) in March last week.
Another impasse continues with the All Zeliangrong Students’ Union (AZSU) demanding that the 11 AR be shifted out of Zeliangrong area.
Despite such protests, Assam Rifles posted in different parts of Naga dominated areas of Manipur continue to arrest NSCN (I-M) cadres.
The AR recently arrested four cadres of the outfit, one from Ukhrul district and three from Senapati district.
A deputy secretary and two under secretaries of the outfit were reportedly detained by troops of 5 AR at Karong in Senapati district on May 1 last while the 17 AR nabbed a ‘ss’ major of the outfit at Awang Kasom of Ukhrul district on the same day.
