In a major setback to DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi, the special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court on Friday rejected the bail plea of his daughter and Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi, accused in the Rs 1.77 lakh crores 2G spectrum allocation scam.
Kanimozhi broke down completely after hearing the court’s verdict and was consoled by her husband and accompanying DMK leaders.
The DMK MP is lodged in a 15 ft x10 ft cell at the Tihar Jail, far from the air-conditioning and other comforts which she is used to at her palatial bungalow in Chennai’s CIT colony. 43-year-old Kanimozhi was taken to Jail No. 6 by women personnel after a special CBI court rejected her bail plea and order her “forthwith” arrest. A woman police personnel was seen holding Kanimozhi’s hands when she was taken from the Patiala House complex.
According to jail officials, Kanimozhi will have access to a television set, newspapers, a ceiling fan and a cot in her 15ft x 10 ft cell. While reacting to Kanimozh’s arrest Congress said they won’t comment on the issue. Also Congress party clearly pointed out that this arrest is not going to affect the ties with the alliance in any ways. Congress spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi said it was not necessary for a political party to comment upon ongoing judicial proceedings involving merits of individual cases.
“This is a matter between the accused concerned, the relevant court and the lawyer concerned... You can be rest assured that this being an individual matter between investigating agencies and accused persons, there is absolutely no connection with or impact on the alliance which continues as we had said earlier,” Singhvi said.
Coming out in strong support of Kanimozhi, Vasanthi Stanley of the DMK said “Kanimozhi is the daughter of our Supremo and also she is a courageous woman, so DMK will look-out for all possible remedies to take out Kanimozhi clean out of the mess. That’s not just the end of it.”
The special CBI court also dismissed bail plea of Sharad Kumar, managing director and CEO of Kalaignar TV, in connection with the case. Special CBI judge OP Saini, while observing that Kanimozhi is a kingpin and has been the active brain behind the 2G scam, said, “The bail plea dismissed.”
The court, while ordering their “forthwith” arrest, also directed them to appear before it at 10 am on Monday.
However, the DMK leadership has decided to take the legal battle forward and Kanimozhi is likely to approach the Delhi High Court for getting bail. In wake of the special CBI court rejecting the bail plea, both Kanimozhi and Sharad Kumar are likely to be arrested by the CBI soon.
CBI had named Kanimozhi and Sharad Kumar as co-conspirators in its April 25 supplementary chargesheet after it traced an illegal money trail of Rs.214 crore in the scam. Kalaignar TV channel had earlier stated that the Rs.214 crore it got was a loan and paid back with interest.
Today’s development is seen as a big blow for the DMK leadership, which has been claiming that A Raja and Kanimozhi are innocent, in the wake of its humiliating defeat in recently concluded Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu.
