Flash flood strikes Imphal city area of Manipur

A torrential rain on Friday caused flood that submerged many low lying areas in Imphal city forcing many to vacate elsewhere.
Officials of the state meteorology office said heavy rains since Friday night, totaling 45mm with heavy rain till Saturday afternoon caused the drainage system to overflow, especially in the heart of the city where construction of drains and other works like digging the surface for sewerage project was going on.
At some places in Sagolband, Uripok and Keishampat of Imphal city, several by-lanes was submerged in water.
Roads at Thangal and Paona Bazar and its adjoining areas were flooded due to accumulation of rain water coupled with clogged drains. Many blame the state irrigation and flood control department for failure to check frequent flooding in the city.
Heavy rainfall in Tamenglong, Churachandpur and part of Senapati was also reported on Saturday.
Tamenglong district which recorded a heavy rain of 140mm on Saturday is likely to continue in the next two days, while Ukhrul district which experience a moderate rainfall of 26mm, is likely to experience a cold weather in the couple of days.
As per the main weather observation of the Indian Meteorology Department, heavy rainfall is being forecast in the entire northeast due to the western disturbance affecting western Himalayan region and adjoining plains of northwest India during next three days.
The upper air cyclonic circulation over Haryana, south Uttar Pradesh, north Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand with an embedded upper air cyclonic circulation over Jharkhand is likely to escalate over Assam and neighbourhood in lower levels.
