The United Democratic Party (UDP), an ally of Congress-led Meghalaya United Alliance (MUA) government will be meeting here tomorrow to discuss on the prevailing political situation in the State.
The UDP top brass would review the overall political scenario in the state in the wake of the infighting in the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) over the leadership issue. At least 18 of the 28 Congress legislators have demanded removal of Dr Mukul Sangma as Chief Minister for his ‘autocratic style of functioning’ and ‘lack of transparency in governance’.
“Though, no specific agenda was fixed for the meeting, but we will be reviewing the political fallout and several other issues,” senior UDP legislator Bindo M Lanong, who is also a Deputy Chief Minister in the Mukul Sangma’s ministry, said.
The UDP, which has nine members in the 60-members House, is an important partner of the MUA government.
Sources close to the UDP said that tomorrow’s UDP meeting is likely to be a stormy one with one of its party’s legislator Ardent M Basaiawmoit favouring to withdraw support to MUA government. In fact, the UDP chief and former Chief Minister Donkupar Roy had openly said that his party was not in favour of frequent change of leadership in the state.
The Congress enjoys the support of UDP (9 members), HSPDP (2), KHNAM (1) and four Independent members. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), the main opposition in the state, has 15 members.
