Four hurt in IMC election clash

At least four persons including a woman were injured Wednesday in a clash between BJP and Congress workers at Haokip Veng in Imphal east.
The incident occurred after the election to the Imphal Municipal Council (IMC) which was conducted peacefully. Police said the clashes occurred around 2.30 pm when a vehicle of BJP candidate in the 19/19 (Mahabali Kabui) ward was stopped by Congress workers. The woman was injured when she intervened in the fracas as her younger brother was among the BJP workers who were manhandled. In the ward, BJP candidate Yumlembam Ratikanta alias Boy and Congress candidate RK Bina Devi were in the fray among others.
Police who rushed to the area resorted to blank firing to disperse the crowd. About 80 percent out of 1.62 lakh electors voted to elect 26 councillors and 53 ward development members to the Imphal Municipal Council in Manipur, an official source said. One councillor and a ward development members were declared elected uncontested, till filling of this report.
IMC covers seven Assembly constituencies including Wangkhei, Yaiskul, Sagolband, Singjamei, Khurai, Uripok and Thangmeiband around Imphal town. Counting would be conducted on May 29. Historic road to be upgraded
