Union Minister of Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal on Thursday questioned Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh’s comment on the quality of the faculty of IIT and IIM. Defending the IIT faculty, Sibal said, “25 per cent of the IIT faculties are the students of IIT. Surely 25 per cent students who are world class students are world class teachers”.
Jairam Ramesh on May 23 kicked up a controversy claiming that the faculties at the premier Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) are not world class. “IITs are surviving because of their students. There is hardly any worthwhile research from our IITs. The faculty in the IIT is not world class. It is the students in IITs who are world class. So the IITs and IIMs are excellent because of the quality of students not because of quality of research or faculty,” said Ramesh in New Delhi on Monday. Ramesh is himself an alumnus of IIT Mumbai.
