The annual 80 plus citizens’ friendship day was held Saturday with dozens of 80 plus elders from Kohima village attending the event with additional chief secretary, Banuo Z. Jamir as chief guest.
Speaking to the gathering, Banuo Z. Jamir said wisdom of the elderly was valued highly and asserted the society still counts on them. She urged elders not to let old age hinder them, but to teach society with their wisdom and knowledge.
Mentioning the work education programme under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) which enables students to learn domestic works beyond the classroom through work experience, Banuo stated elders can play a vital role here in teaching what has been learned. She pointed out that teaching or learning is not confined to schools alone but starts from home, where the best education can be taught.
The chief guest also lauded the efforts of the organizers, Friends of 80 plus, for their initiative in honouring elders as is written in the Bible. She expressed hope that the society would inculcate this good habit of honouring and showing respect to elders. The day was marked with medical check-up sponsored by Oking Hospital Kohima. Doctors specialized in different health fields examined members of 80 plus present at the programme.
Earlier, Methaneilie Jütakhrie performed songs while Kereivilie Kire read out messages given out by some village elders. A minute silence was observed in remembrance of friends who had passed away last year.
Friends of 80 plus group is a group of likeminded citizens of Kohima Village formed to reach out to 80plus elders in a spirit of friendship, respect and shared responsibility. Since 2006, the group has been organizing friendship day for 80 plus citizens of Kohima village. The number of 80plus citizens of Kohima village at present is 147 as recorded.
