Nagaland chief minister, Neiphiu Rio laid the foundation stone of an Integrated Tourist Destination and Eco-adventure at Tizu River, Meluri, on April 30.
The programme was held at the bank of Tizu River, a few kilometers away from Meluri town. Addressing the gathering, Rio stated that the present government was giving a special emphasis for developing backward areas of the state.
He said the area under Meluri sub-division was rich in minerals and natural resources, and if developed properly, could be a source of tourist attraction and exported to neighbouring Myanmar to uplift the economy. He revealed the government was willing to give full support to promote eco-tourism and make it a popular tourist destination. Rio also encouraged the youth to take up professional courses such as hotel management and catering hospitality courses in order to attract tourist when they visit the area.
He stressed on the importance of maintaining ecological balance and called for active support from the public for preservation and protection of the natural environment.
The programme also included community fishing where hundreds of river fishes were displayed to the visiting dignitaries. Rio called on the gathering to organize an annual traditional fishing festival to attract tourist to the area, at the same time encouraged them to preserve the forest around the tourist destination and eco adventure site with an assurance to provide financial assistance equal to the value of the area preserved.
He disclosed that the state government was planning to start a runway short service for tourists visiting Nagaland, which would cater for ferrying tourist in the state.
The programme was chaired by director tourism, K. Yanpanthang Kikon, while the vote of thanks was delivered by Riepetho Nyuwi. Parliamentary secretary for tourism, law and justice, Yitachu, gave the welcome address, invocation by Pastor, MVBC Rev. T. Kachusie and benediction by deacon, MVBC, Pesatho Kajiri.
The function was also attended by minister for health and family welfare, Kuzholuzo Neinu, minister for agriculture, Dr. Chumben Murry, chairman NKVIB Dr. Nicky Kire, deputy commissioner Phek, SP Phek and other government officials and public.
