With only two days to go for the by-election in Aonglenden, the NPF party leaders and workers, in a show of strength came with full force to campaign for the NPF candidate Toshipokba and further added that this ensuing election was between the ‘government and the opposition’.
In his campaign speech, NPF candidate Toshipokba Longkumer asserted the party was travelling on the winning side, and appealed the gathering to continue their support for him till the end of the journey. Terming the upcoming election as an acid test for the party and the Mokokchung people in particular, he said that it was the time to choose between the ‘tyranny rule’ of Congress and the ‘peace and development rule’ of DAN or to roll back to those years when voices were hushed up with barrels of gun; when they were treated like unwanted strangers in their own land.
Dr. Shürhozelie, President of Naga Peoples Front in his address stated the NPF has been ‘compelled’ to talk about the past, against the party’s wishes, due to the ‘confusion’ created by some statements from some people. Reacting to the campaign speech of Luizinho Faleiro, Congress working committee member in charge of Nagaland, who recently visited the district to campaigned for Dr. Jamir, he questioned whether organising of mafia groups, poll capturing wound up to justify his statement of his the “glorious past” under the past Congress regime. He said the decision of Dr. S.C. Jamir to contest the by-election was ‘very wrong’ for someone of his stature as he is going to lose all his prestige and honour he has earned if he lose this election. Deeply regretting the demise of Nungshizungba, he said that life must go on and that it is the responsibility of the people of Aonglenden to fill up the void created by his demise. He also added this is the best opportunity to fill up that gap by electing a vibrant leader like Toshipokba who is concerned for the youth and the society. He also said to the gathering that this election is the best chance for the people of Aonglenden to reciprocate the kindness shown by the DAN government under the leadership of Rio by electing Toshipokba.
Rio in his speech said that he was not against Dr. Jamir but against the policies of the Congress party. He also said that if Dr. Jamir is revered and respected in the centre by the congress party, why there was no high profile central leaders campaigning for him and instead send ‘someone’ who was ignorant about the history of the Nagas, who further hurt the sentiments of the Nagas by his rubbish talks. He also appealed to the gathering to vote Toshipokba to power if they want to enjoy and experience the fruits of change that has been deprived to the people of Aonglenden in the past.
C.M. Chang, MP addressing the gathering, said that the policy makers in the central government give importance to the two MPs from Nagaland as they are very much part of the . On the upcoming by-election, he said the public loves action-oriented leaders and said there would be no development without a good leader. G. Kaito Aye, Minister and Co-opted Member, State Level Campaign Committee stated the ‘era of Jamir is over’. He also added that unlike the past elections, the current atmosphere is comparatively peaceful. In this context, he lauded the citizens of Aonglenden for the maturity shown during this whole election process.
A number of ministers, parliamentary secretaries, advisors and MLAs including NLA deputy speaker Ralanthung took part in the election campaign held at Town Hall, Mokokchung. The NPF party got a shot in the arm with some Congress party office bearers along with party workers who recently left the party and joined the NPF also attended the campaign rally.
