Minister for agriculture, Dr. Chumben Murry on Sunday urged the members of Indian Red Cross Society Nagaland branch to act as watchdog of the society and be agents of change in initiating prevention and mitigation. He was speaking at the programme on occasion of World Red Cross Day celebrated in Kohima under the theme ‘find the volunteer inside you.’
Dr. Chumben said that on such a significant day, the members need to talk about ground realities and reassess their capacity for preparedness and mitigation of disaster in the state. He pointed out that Red Cross Society should not only dwell on relief or mitigation after disaster but also act as agents of influencing the government in areas of concern so that preventive measures are also taken.
Dr. Chumben maintained that the general public’s awareness level was low added with a complacent attitude. Further, he stressed on the need to change the old system of casualty management in the state where casualties were treated only when brought to the care of hospitals. Dr. Chumben also underlined the need to improve in relief operations, medical ambulances and fire brigade services.
Giving the thematic address chief information commissioner, Lalhuma said that a volunteer can be evoked when one comes forward to help others, being prompted by love, concern and compassion for others.
He said that a strong community spirit can awaken the spirit of volunteering among the people. He added that imbibing the teachings of Jesus Christ can help one find the volunteer in him. He also highlighted the humanitarian works done by the Red Cross Society all over the world.
