At least 38 youths were detained during an intensified counter insurgency operation by security forces in Imphal on the eve of the visit of union home minister P. Chidambaram. He is scheduled to arrive Imphal Tuesday on a two-day visit.
Separate meetings with Manipur governor and chief minister would be held on the first day of his arrival.
He would proceed to Ukhrul to inaugurate a mini secretariat building on the next day. He is scheduled to address a public meeting there, as per tentative programme.
As he is likely to travel by road depending on the weather condition, elaborate security arrangement has been made along the Imphal-Ukhrul section of the NH-150, sources said adding that security has also been upped in Imphal area too. A large contingent of police commandos conducted cordon and search operations, during which at least 38 youths were picked up for further verification, a police officer said.
“Though there were no specific input, militants are likely to trigger bombs during the home minister’s stay in Imphal,” the officer disclosed recalling the triggering of a high power bomb during President Pratibha Devi Singh Patil in the recent time. Army has also conducted a flag march along the stretch of the Imphal-Ukhrul road, another source said.
