After Guwahati High Court’s instruction to intensify detention and identification of Bangladeshi immigrants, police is carrying out stringent drives across the district to locate and detain foreigners, particularly Bangladeshi settlers, since the last few days.
The sudden development began after Court’s judgment in this respect about a fortnight back. The ruling made it clear that many foreign nationals facing trial vanishes after the final judgment from the highest appellate authority and police can not produce them in the Court for further proceedings like deportation etc.
The ordinance says that henceforth persons facing charge of being a foreign national will have to undergo trial under detention. This means any person charged will be first taken into police custody and will be confined in the designated detention centers, for which district administration will have to construct Detention centers at each district headquarters of the state within May 20.
