Students protest against non-availability of textbooks

Agitated students Tuesday hurled eggs at the office of the Board of Secondary School (BSEM) and SSA (Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan) at Imphal, Manipur in protest against authorities’ failure to ensure availability of textbooks.
Students protested in front of BSEM office around 50 meter away from the state police headquarter with slogans against government’s apathy toward redressing grievances of the students.
Police rushed immediately to the spot to disperse the students with baton charge and fired some tear gas. However, no casualty was reported in the police action.
At least four leaders, including two functionaries of Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), one each of All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) and Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF), taking part in the protest, were detained by the police.
DESAM, AMSU, MSF and KSA jointly launched the protest demanding textbooks. They alleged that many textbooks in the stock of the BSEM, responsible for the publication of textbooks for supply free of cost to the students by the government under SSA scheme.
A spokesperson of the students’ bodies told the reporters that they found more than 20,000 copies of SSA books in the warehouse of BSEM during a drive on Monday.
When they tried to collect the textbooks, police intercepted and prevented them from doing so.
Meanwhile, admitting the delay in supply of free text books to school children, education department assured to supply from May 15 adding the government was equally concerned on delay in supply of free text books. (Correspondent)
