Workshop on pig production

International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), Nairobi, local co-ordination office, Guwahat NE India in its venture to study the problems faced by the farmers/traders in the production of pigs and marketing organized a day-long workshop at conference hall, Crown Hotel here Thursday.
The workshop was held on the topic “development challenges and opportunities for pig production and marketing in Dimapur” with Dr. R. Deka scientific officer, ILRI Guwahati and Dr. F. Paolo, knowledge management expert, Asia as moderators.
Certain issues on role of pig in the livelihood of pig producers and traders in Dimapur; development opportunities and scope of intervention by government/non-government agencies for pig production and marketing and livestock services available in Dimapur and scope of investment were taken up during the workshop.
According to Dr. R. Deka the main objective of the workshop was to find out the various issues and address the problems faced by farmers/traders in the production of pigs, opportunities, etc. It was for this purpose, the workshop was organized and through this, ILRI would be able to document issues and help the government to frame and design a people friendly project, said Dr. Deka.
It may be mentioned that the institute had already organized a workshop at Assam. Similarly, it would be conducting workshops in Mizoram and Manipur.
Apart from framers and animal traders, officials from SASARD, ICAR and various financial institutions also participated at the workshop.
Earlier, District Veterinary Officer, Dimapur, Dr. V.H. Shohe delivered the welcome address while Dr. H. Hevito Shohe chaired the inaugural programme.
