Sweeping away all the existing anti Congress forces in the hills of Assam, the Congress won all the four legislative assembly seats defeating PAPA (Peoples’ Alliance for Peace Agreement), a conglomeration of several socio- political organizations, newly formed to back the radical organization UPDS (United Peoples’ Democratic Solidarity) in bringing peaceful and honourable solution.
Congress came out victorious against PAPA, the principle opposition in Karbi Anglong while other parties secured fewer votes. In 18th Howraghat Constituency, Congress contender and sitting minister of Gogoi’s cabinet, KS Engti defeated his nearest PAPA backed rival, Chomong Kro by a margin of 9780 votes while Congress received a total of 42,943 votes. Kro, also a heavyweight ASDC leader was supported by major organizations like CPI (ML), however failed to put an end to the Congress success story in Howraghat constituency.
Congress candidate also won the seat at 17th Bokajan constituency for the first time in the electoral politics. Klengdun Engti, son of the sitting MP from the twin hill districts of Assam, Biren Sing Engti defeated the three time winner, ASDC top leader and PAPA candidate, Jagat Sing Engti by a margin of 16809 votes. The unexpected dividend for Congress came from 20th Baithalangso LA seat. Dr. Man Sing Rongpi of Congress, registered his victory by a margin of 9338 votes against his nearest rival, PAPA backed candidate and veteran ASDC leader, Jotson Bey.
In the most prestigious 19th Diphu LA seat, three time previous winner and strong Congressman, Bidya Sing Engleng recorded an easy victory over his much hyped PAPA backed candidate, Jeorge Millick. The ripened Congress stalwart, BS Engleng, defeated young firebrand PAPA contender Millick by a 12298 votes.
The retired IAS Officer, John Ingti Kathar, who was the most talked about contender for Diphu seat and BJP choice, Padma Maibongsa secured fewer vote against the rival BS Engleng.
