48-hr deadline to solve pharmacist’s murder

Irate residents of Wangoi town in Imphal West district of Manipur, Wednesday have set 48-hour deadline to book the culprits involved in the killing of a pharmacist on Tuesday.
Huidrom Jiten (45) of Yumnam Huidrom Khunyai Leikai, a pharmacist in state Medical Department was shot twice by two assailants around 8.30 pm while he was returning home with two of his friends.
Police quoting the statement of Jiten’s colleagues said that the two gunmen took away Jiten and was gunned down instantly.
Police suspected the assailants to be activists of a KCP group.
Decrying the killing of Jiten, residents of Wangoi area carried out a protest at Luxmi Bazar at Wangoi. Shops and other establishment in the bazaar area closed down and the road blocked during the protest.
Meanwhile, a joint action committee has been formed by the residents and threatened to launch a series of agitations if the government fails to book the culprits for the murder of the pharmacist.
“Assailants should be booked within 48-hour. If government failed to book them within the set deadline, they will launch a series of agitations including blocking of Mayai Lambi (state highway) road,” convener of the JAC H Premananda said.
The countdown began from Wednesday noon, he added.
A memorandum containing various demands including booking of the culprits was submitted to the chief minister. Other demands included a government job for the next of kin of the deceased Jiten and an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh.
The body of Jiten was transferred to RIMS morgue by police. We will not receive the body, unless the government meets our demand, he added.
