PHED Officials along with the newly recruited WSSO consultants / chemists visited Nirmal Gram Puraskar (NGP) winner villages of Nsunyu and Chunlika of Kohima district about 65 km from the Kohima on Wednesday.
The visiting team numbering about 40 was much impressed to see the efforts that villagers have been taking to keep their village worthy of the award they received from President of India in receiving prestigious NGP -2009 fully sanitized villages during 2009-10.
The villages have completely done away with the evil practice of open defecation and have been successful in keeping the environment clean conducive of good community health. Villagers testified that their whole villages conduct mass social work once a month and the colonies once a week to make sure that their villages is kept clean all the time.
The organization, education and the discipline coupled with the drive and enthusiasm that these villages have displayed in shaping their villages into what they are today certainly is a challenge to many villages in the State, to achieve Nirmal State status in a few years’ time from now. Water and sanitation support organization of PHED is currently conducting a three-week long orientation cum capacity building training at Kohima where a total of 33 newly recruited consultants and chemists are receiving the training.
The trained consultants / chemists would spread out to all districts of the state and carry out assignments relating to IEC, HRD, water quality monitoring & surveillance, management information system, research & development, total sanitation campaign, etc.
The focus is on community management for generating sustainability of created water and sanitation systems through education, organization and discipline of the user community.
Trainees would be conducting field visits and participatory rural appraisal (PRA) exercises in Kohima and Dimapur districts during the training period.
