New Bishop of Kohima Diocese

Following of the resignation of the second Bishop of the Diocese of Kohima, Right Rev. Jose Mukala in Oct. 2009, Pope Benedict XVI has named Very Reverend Fr. James Thoppil to take over the reins as the new Bishop-elect. The announcement was made Thursday afternoon at the Vatican.
In a communiqué, Fr. R. R. Graviour Augustine, spokesperson Diocese of Kohima said the Apostolic administrator, Diocese of Kohima and Archbishop of Imphal, Most Rev. Dominic Lumon, read out the notification sent by the Vatican via Apostolic Nunciature, Delhi in the Mary Help of Christians Cathedral Church, Kohima.
Thoppil was the Rector of Oriens Theological College, Shillong until the new assignment. He will be the third Bishop of the Diocese which comprises the entire state of Nagaland with over 58,000 Catholic population.
Rev. Fr. James Thoppil was born in Neezhoor, Kerala, on March 2, 1959 and was raised in the same place till he finished his Matric in 1974. His father
The Bishop-elect began his priestly formation in 1974 at St. Joseph’s Seminary, Dibrugarh. He did his Philosophical Studies at Christ King College, Shillong while at the same doing his B.A at St. Antony’s College, Shillong.
He did Regency at St. Joseph’s Church, Tseminyu from 1980 to 1982. He completed the Theological studies (B.Th) at Sacred Heart Theological College, Shillong, under the Salesian Pontifical University, Rome, from 1982 to 1986. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Kohima on Jan. 12, 1986 at St. Joseph’s Church, Arunoottimangalam, Kerala.
As a priest Fr. James was first appointed as the Dean of Studies in Good Shepherd Seminary, Dimapur in1986. He then became the Parish Priest of Holy Cross Church, Dimapur in 1990 and served there until 1994 when he was sent to Rome to pursue his Higher Studies in Theology.
