Seven killed in Meghalaya, three injured

Seven members of a family, including a minor girl were killed and three others injured Friday when the Bolero they were traveling in fell into a deep gorge in Meghalaya’s Jaintia Hills district.
The mishap took place at Tongseng village, about 140 Km from Shillong, the state capital of Meghalaya, Khliehriat Sub-Divisional Police Officer Willy Muksor said.
“All seven died in the spot in the accident. Those killed include two women and a minor girl, while the injured include a driver and two minor’s (boy and a girl),” Muksor said.
He said the ill-fated vehicle carrying two staffers of Barak Valley Cement Limited (BVCL) and their family members were on their way to Guwahati in Assam from the cement plant located in Assam’s Karimganj district.
BVCL Liaison Officer S. Chakraborty confirmed those killed include Sanjay Jha, the chief chemist and Santosh Kumar Jha, the head clerk of the cement plant purchasing unit.
“Our staffers including with their family had left this morning to Guwahati (the commercial hub of Assam) to board a train to their native village in Bihar,” Chakraborty said.
Of the three injured, he said two were the children of Sanjay Jha and the driver.
“We are retrieving the bodies from the spot,” Muksor said, adding that the injured have been rushed to nearby hospital.
Investigation is on to find out the cause of the accident, Muksor said.
