Women groups from outside the state, in solidarity with Naga women, have sought immediate implementation of the Nagaland Municipal Amendment Act 2006 ensuring 33% reservation of seats for women in all municipalities in Nagaland.
The groups said their appeal was in support of the demand made by the action committee on women reservation consisting of the Naga mothers’ association (NMA), eastern Naga women organisation (ENWO) and the Watsu Mongdang.
“We also support their demand for holding the elections which is long overdue and protection of their constitutional rights as this Amended Act has been unanimously passed by the Nagaland State Assembly in 2006,” stated a letter to chief minister Neiphiu Rio, jointly submitted by 24 women groups and individuals.
