Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) expressing concern over recent floods that wreaked havoc in several areas of Dimapur Saturday said the incident it was a wake up call for citizens and a reminder to public what was causing the inundation.
According to DMC chief advisor Er. Keditsu encroachment over drains, improper culverts across the roads and rampant dumping of garbage into drains by residents were the three main reasons causing inundation. DMC chief warned that Dimapur could face even more severe flood problems in future if adequate measures were not taken up promptly.
The DMC chief said it was time for all including the public to act jointly to tackle problem which was already posing serious threat for Dimapur. He said people should become civilized, change attitude, develop more civic sense and realize what was causing such floods. Keditsu said telecom wire and pipes, in some locations, through the middle of the culvert were obstructing the flow of water.
While stating that DMC may not have been upto people’s expectation despite putting in its all out effort to keep the city garbage free, the chief advisor attributed to lack of cooperation from the citizens. He, however, mentioned that DMC’s garbage collection has doubled in volume since last year besides enforcing special task force to clear garbage from drains.
Keditsu assured that DMC would continue to do its best to keep the town clean, adding realization and cooperation was expected from the public. He also disclosed that DMC would also carry out drain expansion drive. He said DMC would entrust GBs of Dimapur to assist civic body in maintaining cleanliness and hygiene.
