Less than few hours after forest department planted tree saplings in the children’s park premises in Supply colony on June 18, the saplings were totally destroyed the same evening allegedly by GB of the colony, ex-chairman, residents and some government officials.
The ‘bokul’ and ‘ajar’ tree saplings planted under forest department’s declaration of 2011 as ‘Year of tree plantation’ was completely uprooted and the bamboo protective fencing completely destroyed.
The in-charge of children’s park, United Women Welfare Organisation (UWWO) Dimapur has expressed surprise at the un-civilized act and vandalism led by government appointed GB.
UWWO has appealed to the administration to look into the matter seriously and wondered what made the residents of supply colony commit such unwanted act.
UWWO also reiterated the policy of the state and central government where plantation of trees was carried out to counter ecological imbalances of the land, and stated it has been maintaining the park since 1987 with the permission of the government besides running a pre- nursery school established in the year 1987 within the premises.
According to UWWO Dimapur, before opening the children’s park located in the centre of Supply colony, the site was originally a place for dumping garbage for several years.
UWWO alleged that tree saplings were destroyed on the pretext that the plantation drive was done without the permission of the colony leaders.
