New terminal at Umroi airport

Civil Aviation Minister Vayallar Ravi will inaugurate the new terminal of Umroi airport terminal in Meghalaya on June 25, an airport official said today.
“The new terminal is fitted with modern equipments baggage-x-ray machines, explosive trace detectors, beside close-circuit TV,” Umroi Airport Controller, Airport Authority of India (AAI), V Mohan said.Six check-in counters, security hold area, conveyer belt, separate blocks have been created for arrival and departure and medical inspection room have been introduced in the airport, he said.
Mohan said the new terminal will be inaugurated by Civil Aviation Minister Vayallar Ravi in presence of Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and Union Minister of State Vincent H Pala. The airport official said the expansions work of the airport is in progress. “We have acquired 224.16 acres of land for expansion of the airport to facilitate landing of Airbus A320,” Mohan said.
The runway will be extended to about 7, 500 from present runway of 6,000 feet, the airport official said. Presently, only 50—seated ATR aircrafts lands at the Umroi airport from Kolkata everyday, except Friday, and returns the same day.
The Umroi Airport was constructed in the mid-sixties and became operational in the mid-seventies. Between September 1974 and August 1976, air service was being operated from the said airport by one Private Company by the name and style of JAMAIR.
Then in 1981, Vayudoot Air Service started operation but was closed down for unavoidable circumstances. It was again re-introduced in 1984 with F-27 type of aircrafts known as Fokker Friendship. This service discontinued in 1991.
