Stalemate within the ruling Congress in Manipur between chief minister O Ibobi and commerce and industries minister Y Erabot opened up Sunday, when the later vowed to fight against Ibobi’s “expanding family politics” without mentioning Ibobi’s name directly.
The political row within the party heated up when a clashed broke out between workers of the minister Erabot and Okram Henry, son of Ibobi’s elder brother over Wangkhei A/C seat where Erabot was elected in the last election. Conflicts between the workers of the two have also been reported on many occasions. Of the latest incident, it was reported that escorts personnel of Erabot and Henry on Saturday night exchange fire over an alleged attempt to abduct some workers of Erabot by Henry at Maringlane Tribal colony.
According to some eyewitnesses the tussle in the locality erupted when workers of Henry allegedly took away a female helper with a view to handover to her family after he was ill-treated. Erabot claimed that the firing started by the escort personnel of the Henry and demanded review in providing house guard cum escort personnel to individuals. “There is the need for review in the provision of house guard cum escort personnel. I will go on to challenge the existing system,” he said reiterating that he had been always against such kind of policy which led to the expansion of “gun culture”. Pointing out that the close relatives of the chief minister have been provided house guard cum escorts from the state home department, he said that he will continue to protest against it.
Meanwhile, in the vote counting for the Imphal Municipal Council which commenced from 8 am today, so far (till 5 pm) results of six wards had been declared. Three seats went to Congress while one each went in favour of BJP, NCP and Independence.
