In light of the scheduled electoral roll photo identity card (EPIC) and photo electoral roll (PER) exercises, the state government has appealed to the citizens – whose names have already been enrolled in voter lists– to appear at their respective polling stations at the appointed day and get photographed for issue of voter identity cards.
State chief secretary Lalthara in an official statement explained that voters’ ID has emerged as a powerful tool of citizen empowerment in other parts of the country.
Lalthara said voters ID can be used not only for voter identification at the time of polling but also as proof of identity for schools and college admissions, opening bank accounts, getting phone or mobile connections, obtaining passports and visas, check-ins at airports and railway station and to avail all benefits that the central and state government offers.
He further appealed to all village councils, GBs, civic bodies, political parties, tribal hohos, student bodies, Church authorities, the media and parents of eligible voters to extend their fullest cooperation to the district administrations and respective booth level officers (BLO) for successful completion of the campaign. “The recent successful conduct of an accurate census, despite heavy odds, gives me great hope and confidence that the people of the state will make this photography campaign also a grand success,” said Lalthara.
On the other hand, Lalthara also appealed to all responsible not to let children below the age of 18, to be photographed as it was against the law and could harm the future career of the child. “Also do not get yourself photographed in more than one place as multi-entries in the photo E/rolls are easily detectable which is punishable under section 31 of RP Act 1950,” he cautioned.
Lalthara said as responsible citizens, it was our responsibility to ensure 100% defect free photography campaign which would benefit the people enormously. He further underlined that the scheduled photography campaign would help prepare clean electoral rolls and eliminate election malpractices such as proxy voting.
