500-seat hostels for NE women in Delhi

Union minister of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) BK Handique on Tuesday disclosed that Centre would be opening two more 500-seat hostel for working women from the Northeast.
“This will greatly help the working women from the region in terms of safety and comfort” Handique said.
The new working women’s hostel at Jasola is funded by the DoNER ministry through the North Eastern Council (NEC) in association with the ministry of Women and Child Development. Total cost of the project is Rs.17.44 crores-- NEC was 25%, land cost for the hostel is shared between NEC and ministry of Women and Child Development on a 50-50 basis.
Handique also stated that construction works for another hostel-- Rajiv Gandhi Girls Hostel at the Delhi University (DU) Campus was in progress, which would accommodate 500 tribal girl Students from the NE Region. It is being constructed at a total cost of Rs. 23.33 crores jointly shared between NEC and ministry of Tribal Affairs on 60:40 basis, and would be completed within this financial year. The hostel is located at Dhaka Housing Complex, University of Delhi.
Apart from the tow new hostel under construction, there was already a fully functional 500- seat girls hostel at DU north campus wholly funded by the DoNER ministry.
DU estimates that over 10,000 undergraduate students from outside Delhi are admitted every year in the university-affiliated colleges. Delhi University does not offer any hostel accommodation at the undergraduate level; only individual colleges provide hostel facilities. Foreign students are accommodated at International Student’s Hostel. Foreign girl students are accommodated in PG Women’s Hostel. The capacity of college hostels is limited, accommodating less than 20% of all hostel applications. Out of the 13 hostels available for undergraduate students in Delhi University, 11 are in North Campus colleges and 2 are off campus.
