3 policemen killed, two injured in M’laya

Three policemen were killed and two critically injured Saturday by militants in the western part of Meghalaya, police official said. “A group of ten heavily armed militants hiding on a hilltop attacked a highway patrolling police team at Thapa Darengchi area in East Garo Hills district,” district magistrate Praveen Bakshi said. During the gun fight, Bakshi said the armed militants snatched away four rifles which include an AK-47 rifle, Insas rifle, Self-loading rifle and a Carbine. The deceased has been identified as Blein Makhroh, Duke M Sangma and Johnhighbirth Marak, while GG Momin and M Rymbai, who were wounded in the attack, has been rushed to Guwahati and Goalpara for immediate medical treatment, Bakshi said. No militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but police suspect the hand of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) and National Democratic Front of Bodoland in the ambush.
