Zunheboto: Schools under DIS Zunheboto observed ‘World Environment Day’ at GPS Nitomount Zunheboto. Tree saplings were distributed to all the 127 schools under this establishment where mass tree plantation was carried out. Inter school elocution competition on the topic “Man and Forest” was held, school children presented short plays and skits on the pollution and environment. Meanwhile, Deputy commissioner was Chief Guest while the DIS Zunheboto delivered the keynote address.
5 Sector AR: The 5 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR (North) celebrated ‘World Environment Day’ by undertaking an intensive tree plantation drive in hands with NGOs, school children, villagers and govt officials on June 5. All under command units and 5 Sector Headquarters under the initiative and able guidance of Maj Gen Sandeep Singh, AVSM, SM, VSM, IGAR (N) and Brig R Ravi, Cdr, 5 Sector Assam Rifles, undertook large scale tree plantation in their respective areas. In his message, Maj Gen Sandeep Singh asserted that the Assam Rifles was committed in its relentless endeavour to promote afforestation, prevent soil erosion, reduce levels of pollution and conserve flora and fauna. He emphasised on the need of rain water harvesting, use of bio-degradable products, non-use of polythene, disposal and recycling of waste matter and large scale tree and grass plantation. He reiterated that the Assam Rifles was committed towards a Greener Nagaland and pledged to constantly work towards it. All battalions under took extensive plantation drive mainly at Cheiswema, Jalukie, Medziphema, Kohima, Phek, Wokha and Dimapur wherein a total of 4000 saplings of different varieties of plants were planted by the troops and their families, school children and native villagers in and outside military garrisons. Also, several functions like painting and essay writing competition and voluntary cleaning drive were organised in which civil and AR School children, troops and their families actively participated.
SASRD: Nagaland university, School of Agricultural Sciences and Rural Development (SASRD) Medziphema campus observed ‘World Environment Day’ with a plantation drive carried out within the campus premises where more than 100 saplings were planted on June 5. The invocation prayer delivered by Dr. Daiho, Associate Professor.
The chief guest, Prof. Alemla Ao (Dept. of Entomology), delivered the message citing the importance of forests and the duties and obligations of the students especially in the profession of agriculture. She focused on the diversity of north east and its rich resources and that it was the duty of each and everyone to take care of it and continue to safeguard the environment. The programme organized by students’ union of NU: SASRD, was followed by planting of trees and cleaning of the campus premises.
MGHSS: NSS volunteers of Mayangnokcha Govt. Hr. Sec School Mokokchung (MGHSS) observed ‘World Environment Day’ on the theme ‘Forest: Nature at your service’. All the volunteers contributed 2 trees each which were planted at the school campus.
