Dimapur police Saturday said it has cracked two separate cases-- attempted murder of one S. Athili Mao on June 2 last at Elroa lane, Dimapur and murder of an unidentified non-local woman whose bullet riddled body was found from Chathe River, June 3 last.
According to PRO Dimapur police, the main accused and his co-accused involved in both the cases have been arrested.
With regard to June 3 murder, PRO said during investigation police recovered certain material evidences at the crime scene, Chathe River leading to the arrest of a taxi driver from Kohima on June 4 with the help of Kohima police, assisted by all Nagaland taxi association.
The taxi driver has been identified as one Sultan Hussain Tapadar (21), son of Ata Ur-Rahman of Bodunpur, Assam.
Police said a twist in story emerged when the arrested taxi driver on interrogation
revealed that on June 2 night while he was at the railway station two of his friends along with the deceased victim had approached him and requested him to park the vehicle below the flyover so that they could have fun in his vehicle. The deceased was reportedly a sex worker whose identity police said could not be established till date.
So, while they were having fun at around 11 p.m. four miscreants appeared with weapons and assaulted them. They were then blindfolded and taken to Chathe river where the victim was shot dead by the miscreants, police said adding the miscreants forced the taxi driver to drag the lifeless body and dump it into the river.
Later, police said the accused and his two friends were warned with dire consequences not to disclose the crime and was made to go the next morning.
In the meantime, PRO said investigations into the attempted murder of S. Athili Mao also revealed that there were five persons involved in the crime as described by the witnesses and matched the description of the miscreants as revealed by taxi driver.
The police on sensing that the same persons could be involved in both the cases directed the investigation on the same suspects whose identities were established through sources, PRO said.
"While the police were on the hunt for the suspects, investigation took a fortunate turn with the arrest of one of the suspects on June 13 identified as Roland Yanthan, son of Tokhuo Yanthan of Elumyo village, Wokha in connection with an extortion case by the west police station personnel," PRO said.
On interrogation, the accused reportedly revealed that he and his friends were involved in both the cases confirming the suspicion of the police.
Others involved in the crimes were identified and the main accused identified as one Mughato Kiba a.k.a., son of Visheto Kiba of Nitozu village, who was also arrested, police said.
"It has been confirmed that Mughato Kiba had shot both victims based on the statement of other arrested accused and on his own admission," PRO said.
Disclosing that there were six persons involved in the crime, police said search was on to arrest the four absconding persons whose identities were established.
Further, the PRO said the police was confident in unearthing their involvement in similar crimes as investigations were on.
