Next time your office boy comes with a steaming cup of tea, take a closer look at him, he may be richer than perhaps you can ever hope to be.
A peon working in the motor vehicle department check gate at Balarampur in Orissa-Andhra Pradesh border in Ganjam district has been found to possess properties worth over Rs 1 crore.
According to Times of India reports, the crorepati peon, Jaga Rao Reddy, of Sabaradeipeta village under Jarda police station, was arrested by vigilance police on Thursday for allegedly amassing properties disproportionate to his known sources of income. Anti-corruption sleuth raided his houses in the village to unearth his properties on Wednesday. He was produced in a local court on Thursday.
Reddy was working as a DLR peon in the check gate since 1985 and his service was renewed from time to time, said vigilance DSP (Paralakhemundi) S K Mishra.
Vigilance sleuths found seven buildings belonging to the accused in his own village besides 10 homestead plots at different places in Ganjam district and Ichhapurma in Andhra Pradesh.
Reddy also has agriculture land measuring over 15 acres in at least 20 different places of Ganjam district in Orissa and Srikakulam district in Andhra Pradesh. Besides, he has also two gardens in Ichhapuram and Nalabanak in Srikakulam district in AP. The garden at Nalabanka was purchased by him at Rs 1.96 lakh, the sources said. Vigilance sleuths, however, found little cash and bank balance to his name during the raids.
“Though he did not have much cash and bank balance, the value of his buildings and landed properties would be more than Rs 1 crore,” said a vigilance officer.
“We would soon make proper assessment of his movable and immovable property,” he added. Last year the vigilance department arrested a few motor vehicle inspectors in the state for allegedly amassing crores of rupees through unfair means.
