The All Manipur Working journalists’ Union (AMWJU) Sunday condemned the assault on a senior journalist by police personnel who resorted to baton-charge to disperse a crowd in Paona Bazar late Saturday night.
Brozendro Ningomba, former editor of the Hueiyen Lanpao (Manipuri daily), sustained injuries on his left hand when a police personnel hit him with a baton and was hospitalized at RIMS hospital, Imphal. Decrying the act of police, scribes under the aegis of the AMWJU on Sunday convened a meeting at Manipur Press Club I where they condemned the assault meted to their colleague. The meeting decided to urge the higher authority of the state police department to take appropriate action so as to check such unwanted incident in future.
Scribes decided to agitate against the assault. However, SDPO Modhunimai of Imphal West district, who paid a personal visit to the injured senior journalist and also met with the scribes, offered an apology.
While offering apology, he admitted that one of his escort personnel mistakenly hit Brozendro in an effort to control the crowd. The incident occurred when free-lance journalist Brozendro along with some local reporters rushed to the spot at Paona Bazar where two groups of people attacked each other Saturday night around 9.30 pm.
At least 10 persons sustained injuries during the fracas that erupted when two alleged intoxicated persons from Kakhulong were reliving themselves inside the alley of Capital Electronics near the second gate of Kakhulong.
Police, who rushed to the spot when shots were heard, picked up 10 persons including two policemen for questioning.
Sources said that the constable was involved in beating up two persons at the Capital gully.
